At Christchurch, we believe Reading underpins all learning in every curriculum area. It is the basis through which children access and enjoy a wide curriculum. We strongly believe English is key to empowering independence and is a skill that is essential to everyday living. Reading is a necessary skill to access all areas of the curriculum and allows children to fulfil and achieve their full potential in all subjects.
At Christchurch there is a school-wide aim to inspire a genuine, lifelong love of reading. This starts with our very youngest children and continues right through the school.
We encourage our children to read for pleasure and knowledge. We aim to model the importance and fun of reading and the idea that being a good reader will allow everyone to access more learning opportunities.
Children at Christchurch learn to read through a combination of:
The school use the Little Wandle scheme of work to deliver our Phonics teaching. Children have a daily phonics session in EYFS to Year 2. When children are ready they master their knowledge of phonics and more onto spelling and GPS tasks. Where children in KS2 need phonic support, they have catch-up and group sessions to support this.
In Year 1 to 6 children take part in a daily focused Reading Sills lesson in order to develop comprehension skills namely understanding vocabulary, inference, predicting, explaining, retrieval, summarising and sequencing. During this time staff deliver new learning, check on children’s progress and assess learning to inform future planning.
Reading is an important life skill. We want to reward and encourage children to read at home. Therefore, from 22nd November 2024, we have launched our Reading Raffle!
For your child to be entered into the Reading Raffle each week, your child needs to read at least 4 out of 7 times a week.
They need to have their Reading Diaries signed and shown to their class teacher on a Thursday. The raffle will run from Friday to Thursday each week.
If your child has read at least 4 out of 7 times, then their name will be entered into the raffle.
A name will be picked at random from each class. The winner of each class will win a book! This raffle will be every week and we hope to see all children entering every week!
As well as our Reading Raffle we also run a Reading Challenge. Every week we work out the percentage of children in each class who have read the correct number of times and allocated sticker.
0% to 49% = 0 stickers
50% to 74% = 2 stickers
75% to 99% = 3 stickers
100% = 4 stickers
At the end of the term the class who has received the most amount of stickers wins a treat.
